This Autumn’s Fashion Trends

Matthew Cooper Blog

With Autumn right around the corner, the top trends from runways around the globe have trickled their way in from the runway to the retailers. 2017 has given us much to choose from, but are the top trends that we can expect to see this autumn.

High-Shine Metallics

Metallics aren’t just for New Year’s Eve! This autumn, keep the summer glow going with the help of high-wattage accessories and clothing pieces with a liquid metal look. This trend translates easily from day to night.

Plaid Outwear

Time to “check” out a new coat. Plaid outerwear made appearances on the runways of Victoria Beckham and Rachel Zoe, and will easily upgrade any of your wardrobe combinations from simply practical to a cool statement piece.

Velvet Everything

Plush velvet clothes and accessories are the ultimate way to welcome the autumn season. Signal the arrival of cooler temperatures with this soft, luxury textile in shades of cranberry, green, and navy blue.

Pinafore Dresses

The new 2017 class of pinafores includes everything from versatile denim to luxurious details. Try creative layering over turtlenecks and crop tops for a completely fresh look.

Off-the-Shoulder Necklines

Love the off-the-shoulder trend? You’re in luck, because it’s not going anywhere! Take it into cool-weather territory by choosing long sleeves, rich jewel tones, or dark prints, and then pairing with your favorite ankle boots.

Autumn Florals

Leave bright blooms behind and start a new romance with dark floral prints. Moody hues are just as feminine and provide the perfect setting for a deep plum lip.

Choker Necklaces

With the ’90s revival of the choker necklace still in full swing, it reigns as the must-have jewelry piece. Update it for fall with velvets and crystal details that also lend your outfit a slight Victorian vibe.

Embellished Bombers

The beloved bomber is getting a makeover for the new season. Intricate embroidery and lustrous satin take this staple from utilitarian to totally glam. Styling suggestion: layer with jeans and a tee for daytime, then over a slip dress for instant evening cool.

Much like with certain women’s fashion trends, the ’90s revival is still steamrolling ahead in menswear this year. Stick with solid colors, tough canvas, or supple leathers for a versatile accessory to any look.

Plaid Sportcoats

Similar to the ladies fashon trends, plaid is back in a big way for men this year. Though plaid suits are still a safe bet, pairing a plaid jacket with a contrasting trouser combination is the way to go if you want to stand out this autumn.

Patches & Appliqués

While embroidery is a big hit for bombers on both men and women, patches and appliqués have been cropping up on a variety of men’s tops for 2017. There are elaborate designs from big name brands that certainly look good, but will sting the pocket. However high-street brands can still keep you on trend without breaking the bank.

We’re sure the ’80s babies in the room are all loving the return of grunge in fashion lately. Rough, worn, loose, and layered is the name of the game here, and you can pull it off just as easily on a budget as you can with runway flair. Bonus Pick: Toss a camo shirt jacket over the plaid to layer things up as it starts getting cold out.

Puffy Jackets

Rounding out our hit list, everyone’s favorite comfortable outerwear from the ’90s is making another comeback. A mere five years ago, we saw the trend take a loop through the runway shows of Burberry, D&G, and plenty more, but they’re back again with a vengeance this year. Keep an eye out for blue, burgundy, or olive green if you want to go subtle, but tech outerwear giants Patagonia has some great options for those wanting to go for big bold colors this year.
